Ardenne
Abbey (above) was used by an SS Panzer division as its headquarters. Twenty
Canadian soldiers were held as prisoners at the abbey. In June 1944 the
prisoners were murdered execution style by being shot in the head, then
buried in shallow graves. Their bodies were discovered by monks in 1945.
The SS commander was found guilty of war crimes and sentenced to life
imprisonment, yet served only 9 years in jail.
