The bridge commemorates the British paratroopers who captured the original bridge over the Caen canal, preserving an essential transport route for Allied troops.
On the 5th June, 1944, six gliders, containing 181 men, crash landed beside the bridge and successfully completed their objective with the loss of 'only' two men. The statue above is of Major John Howard who led the men, and is erected on the site where the closest glider crash landed.
